Isle Royale National Park Implements New Food Storage Regulations

Isle Royale National Park has implemented new food storage regulations to protect wildlife and human visitors.

“Food storage” refers to food, trash, scented items, cooking supplies and utensils, and fish. These updated regulations go into effect in accordance with the park’s annual season opening on Wednesday.

Animal-resistant containers are now required for overnight camping. Containers on this list, typically known as “bear-resistant canisters,” are approved. Containers not on this list are not guaranteed to be in food storage compliance.

Additionally, park staff will be implementing food storage lockers at every campground throughout Isle Royale. Installation will be ongoing throughout the 2025 season.

To be within food storage compliance, campers, backpackers, and paddlers are instructed to store their items in an animal-resistant container while camping. If in a shelter, keep container in shelter. If in a tent site, place container in a food storage locker.

For cross-country campers, and for those camping in a campground where food storage lockers have yet to be installed, hang container 12 feet high, 6 feet from tree trunk. If unable to hang, secure container to a boulder, log, or tree 200 feet from camp. Boaters are instructed to secure their items in their boat’s cabin or within a secured animal-resistant container or cooler.

No matter the activity, visitors are not to leave their belongings unattended. In developed areas (Rock Harbor and Windigo/Ozaagaateng), backpack storage areas will be designated for daytrippers, day hikers, and lodge guests to utilize.
