All grounds and facilities at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in Texas will be closed for Easter Weekend/NPS file

Editor's note: This updates with Bryce Canyon National Park to close at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

With Easter weekend approaching, at least one national park unit will close for the holiday weekend, another will close entirely Tuesday evening, and a third is planning to delay its spring opening, all due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In Texas at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, where some of the missions have long been used for Sunday services, park officials plan to close the grounds and the missions during the Easter weekend.

"All mission grounds, parking lots and picnic areas will be closed from Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12," a park release said Monday. "Parking lot gates at Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada will be closed. Picnic area parking will also be prohibited near Mission San Jose. Visitors are discouraged from gathering at the mission sites during the holiday weekend. The temporary closures follow San Antonio and Bexar county parks closures for the Easter weekend."

On Monday, April 13, mission grounds and parking lots will again be accessible to the public in accordance with the latest federal, state, and local health guidance.

• Law enforcement rangers will remain on site for visitor and resource protection.
• The grounds at Mission Concepcion, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada will remain open daily from sunrise to sunset.
• The grounds at Mission San Jose will continue to be open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily.

Meanwhile, it was announced Monday afternoon that Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah would close at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the request of the Southwest Utah Public Health Department.

"We have been working closely with Garfield County and the State of Utah to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the state’s ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe’ order,” said park Superintendent Linda Mazzu. “Continued visitation to Bryce Canyon made it hard to maintain the thresholds needed to ensure a safe visit, which is why this temporary closure is so important. I’d like to express my appreciation to Garfield County for taking the initial steps in this process. Your support for Bryce Canyon National Park and our communities is greatly appreciated.”

At Isle Royale National Park in Michigan, officials announced that their normal mid-April opening would be pushed back until June 15.

"During this delayed opening, Isle Royale and its surrounding islands are closed to all visitors. All visitor facilities, including visitor centers, campgrounds and docks, will be closed to visitors until June 15 with no services until the opening date. Lake Superior waters remain open," a park release said.

During the past weekend, Russel Cave National Monument in Alabama closed, as did Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve in Florida, and Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia.
