Cades Cove Loop Road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park will close starting Monday for tree removal.

The road will reopen at noon on Friday, Feb. 27. The temporary closure marks the second time in recent weeks the road shut down for annual maintenance. Work typically includes using heavy equipment to remove brush from the side of the road and any trees that could fall onto the road.

"Thank you for your patience as we complete this essential work," a social media post from the park said. "Mitigating hazard trees in busy areas improves visitor safety."

Similar work was done in January last year. January and February are usually the two least-busy months at the park.

The 11-mile one-way Cades Cove Loop Road is a popular route that circles the valley and provides access to hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and chances to explore the many historic homesites, cemeteries, and churches. Cades Cove also features a visitor center, campground, picnic area, and riding stable.

Seasonal road closures remain in place on several other park routes including Kuwohi Road, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, Little Greenbrier Road, Heintooga Ridge Road, Forge Creek Road, Parson Branch Road, and Rich Mountain Road. Park Headquarters Road is closed due to work on water and wastewater systems.

Visitors should check the park website for the latest road conditions as well as alternative scenic drives and places to explore.
