Sounds Of Nature In National Parks Are Being Trampled By Noise

Standing on the rippled hillside of Checkerboard Mesa in Zion National Park, the sound came in waves as eastbound flight after eastbound flight from McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas passed overhead about every 10 minutes, adding to the cacophony of traffic from the park road 100 or so yards away.

The death at Hawai'i Volcanoes was tied to a vehicle accident, the one at Great Smoky involved a man falling from the top of the Ramsey Cascades waterfall, and in Zion a man possibly fell to his death from an arch.

Smokies Hike Shows Off Views Of Appalachian Trail And Work Of Ridge Runners

The Appalachian Trail, which runs for more than 71 miles through Great Smoky Mountains National Park, showcases world-famous views, and helpers known as Ridge Runners keep visitors safe and informed while maintaining the popular trail. Both the views and the work of the Ridge Runners will be featured in a hike on June 13 organized by the Friends of the Smokies.
