A Colorado woman died after falling into the Colorado River near Hance Rapid, which is located where Red Canyon intersects with the Colorado River at River Mile 77. This is a highly technical and powerful whitewater rapid that was formed by debris from flash floods that tore through Red Canyon/NPS

A Colorado woman on a river trip through Grand Canyon National Park died after falling into the Colorado River near Hance Rapid.

A park release said staff was alerted to the incident by a personal locator beacon shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday. The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center then received a report that CPR was in progress.

Mary Kelley, 68, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, fell into the river at the top of Hance Rapid, Colorado River mile 77, according to the release. After being pulled out of the river others on the trip began CPR. Park rangers were flown into the location but were unable to revive the woman. Kelley was on day nine of a multi-day private boating trip.
