The National Park Service returned to Twitter on Saturday after apologizing for tweets on Friday that apparently irked the Trump administration.
"We regret the mistaken RTs from our account yesterday and look forward to continuing to share the beauty and history of the parks with you," the National Park Service tweeted about 10:30 a.m. Eastern on Saturday.
Many NPS twitter feeds went silent Friday afternoon after the newly installed Trump administration ordered the Interior Department to idle its accounts.
"... All bureaus and the department have been directed by incoming administration to shut down Twitter platforms immediately until further notice," read a notice that went out across the National Park System.
The issue behind the order was apparently an unflattering retweet the National Park Service made comparing crowds at President Obama's 2009 inauguaration and Trump's inauguration. The photos were telling: gaps in the crowds for Trump's inauguration, and a National Mall practically bursting at the seams for Obama's.

This would be funny if it wasn't such a tragic reflection on the state of our nation.
So sad that American citizens are lo longer allowed to see historical protographs documenting reality. It is now up to the Dictator to tell us if his thin skin is willing to allow facts, photographs, science etc....
I see no reason why an appology is needed. It's just a historical photograph that compares two events. Nothing more, and nothing less. Just because there was about a 1/2 the crowd for Trump doesn't change FACTS!
What do you think would happen in the private sector if an employee used corporate resources in an attempt to publicly mock his CEO?
I agree with your point, but the apology was not for the mockery, but for being "mistaken"

Trump is not dictator, EC. Nor is the government ran like a corporation. You are obviously confused. They showed two historical photographs of two inagurations taken from the same angle. The end.
It's obvious that the government isn't run like a corporation. It would have been bankrupt years ago. Oh...wait....
Must agree Gary, history is history. The private sector has a responsibility to its shareholders and hopefully to its employees and customers. The public sector to all citizens. Big difference. Interestingly enough, the public sector bailed out both the financial institutions and automotive companies just a few short years ago. Corruption, both private and public, is an issue, but this is history. The President may not like it, but it is a fact.
Watching FOX "News" while on the gym treadmill. Trump, visiting CIA headquarters today, says news reports of a smaller crowd at his inauguration compared to Obama's are just not right. He had at least as many, and "some people" say twice as many.
Good point Tomi.
It was incredibly stupid to tweet that out. Talk about pulling the tiger's tail....
NPS needs all the help it can get. Getting off on the wrong foot with the White House is oblivious at best, cunnivingly insuborinate at worst.
"The employee regrets his lack of judgement." - Letter in eOPF, hopefully.
This whole thing was based on fake news. The photo with less people was taken way before the time of the speech. Learn the facts before falling for fake news.
Eye roll. I agree with Gary Wilson. I find it concerning that our new president of the United States has such a thin skin that he lets a photo ruin his day (and that's all it was - a piece of history). If I got all hot and bothered by every troll who didn't like one of my photos or who didn't like a post I put on my Facebook page, I'd be a sorry case, indeed. If Trump ever decides to get his feelings hurt over a national park-related article on a national park-related site like the Traveler because he sees something that chafes his thin skin, I guess most of you will have to find some other venue in which to bitch. Maybe that's why you don't fork over the $9.95 to become a member and help support this site.
Rebecca, how do you know it was Trump that go "hot and bothered" and not some manager in the NPS or DOI who knew how inappropriate that tweet was coming from an official NPS account?
Rebecca - this all simply matches his established pattern of thin skinned kneejerk twitter responses to the slightest insult, or more often to published and verifiable facts that he doesn't like.
Scary time for the whole world.
Yet he didn't tweet a word about the NPS post. But go ahead, keep building up your boogy man. Its going to be fun watching you whine the next 8 years.
For two decades, it has been NPS policy not to make official statements regarding crowd size on the National Mall. Didn't this tweet violate this policy?
You are right to a degree this once, Eric. He sent his press secretary out to lie on his behalf.
You must be so proud.

It's interesting to note that the ew.com article itself belies what Spicer and Trump are claiming.
And Variety mentions the Neilsens:http://variety.com/2017/tv/news/donald-trump-inauguration-ratings-30-6-m...
I would be somewhat ok if they apologized for being impolitic. But they apologized for being "mistaken", when they were 100% correct. That's disturbing.
It is actually pretty stupid just to act out and show up the new President. Because there is no reason to post the comparison of 2009 to 2017 unless you wanted to play to the low popularity of this new President.
So it was not just straight history, it had attitude and made a point to say the President is not popular.
that is politics
Don't expose the National Park Service to the fires of vengeance and retribution unless the issue matters to parks. And even if it WERE legitimate (it's not) pick your fights and fight the battles you can win and build your authority, don't piss it away over showing off.
