Grand Canyon Superintendent Lehnertz Cleared Of All Allegations

Feb 9th - 17:40pm | Bill Baehr

I want whatever punishment the accused would have faced for the offense to be suffered by the accuser that cannot prove their accusations. It's just basic fairness.  If the accuser just made an honest mistake that should go unpunished. Lying in accusations should be punished.

Feb 9th - 14:51pm | y_p_w

Bill Baehr: IS there any consequence for those that make false allegations?  I don't get it.  We have a system where one is generally allowed to make an accusation and have it heard.  Now you want some sort of retribution against the accuser?

Feb 8th - 21:45pm | rpsabq

Maybe next time figure out if the employee actually did something wrong and THEN remove her?

Feb 8th - 19:15pm | Tom Sisk

This is the best news I have heard out of the Department of the Interior in a very long time. Chris is an amazing leader, an I look forard to working with her and the rest of her team at Grand Canyon!

Feb 8th - 16:50pm | SW

Thank you Chris for accepting to return after how you were treated.  This is the best news from GC since it was first announce you were going to be Superintendent at the Canyon.   Get back soon and continue the great work you started.

Feb 8th - 16:40pm | Rick B.

She is well known and well liked across the NPS. Of course it matters to restore her reputation that has been attacked.

Feb 8th - 15:37pm | Alfred Thornton

There needs to be consequences!

Feb 8th - 12:33pm | Bill Baehr

Excellent response, thank you. So happy to learn this and see her return to GCNP.

What difference does it make? Are you kidding me Bill Baehr? Superintendent Lehnertz suffered the pain and embarrassment of being removed from her job and park for an unfounded allegation. A public statement exonerating her is the LEAST the NPS.

Feb 7th - 21:30pm | Raisin mountaineer

she was removed from her position.  The allegations would have been made by someone who apparently has a right not to be outed as part of that process-- and outing the allegations might very well out that person.  We can argue about whether that's fair given the result but whatever.  It is news that this very public removal has now been reversed.

Feb 7th - 20:13pm | Bill Baehr

Investigation into undisclosed allegations found no wrong doing? Why publish this? If we don't know the allegations, what difference does it make?

Feb 7th - 19:56pm | billie-o

@anotherparky while not condoning or brushing aside the things you witnessed, it is a societal problem. having working in various fields for the government and in the private sector, its everywhere, unfortunately.

Feb 7th - 19:21pm | AnotherParky

It's so much worse than you think.  This kind of problem is all over the parks.  I worked at Bryce Canyon a couple of years ago and several managers in their 40's and 50's where actively pursuing and dating their own direct employees, most of whom where around 20 years old.  This was a problem that went from the top down, it was really disgusting.  They even had two rapes that year, one which l

i don't know her but I was suspicious as soon as I heard she was accused. People are so threatened by powerful women that they try to do anything to bring them down. Great job with investigation!

You missed an opportunity to plug legislation to reauthorize the LWCF.  It expired at the end of the last fiscal year.  Since I'm assuming no appropriations where made for FY 2019 due to the LWCF expiring, I have questions.   Was the money for these grants left over from FY 2018 or earlier appropriations for this purpose?    Or was this money left over from funds designated for land acquisition

Wolf Moved Last Fall To Isle Royale National Park Heads For Home

Feb 7th - 18:43pm | Anonymous

Yet another harbinger of how this wasteful, ill-considered public relations campaign of a reintroduction attempt is doomed to fail absent constant annual relocation efforts lasting either >forever<, or >until wiser heads prevail<, whichever happens first. Save the taxpayers money and relocate Rolf to a retirement home instead of wolves to Isle Royale.

in researching my family history I have found out that a relative, killed in WWII , has had a redwood dedicated, in his name. Drugs, Not Bear Attack, Killed Man At Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Feb 6th - 08:35am | ecbuck

It might be self enlightening for some of you to go back and read your original comments on this story:  https://www.nationalparkstraveler.org/2018/09/rangers-kill-black-bear-mi...

Feb 6th - 07:52am | Peter Dorsa

The fact that they had a hard time tracking the bear, even with a collar, should have been there first clue this bear was not aggressive but was trying to evade them. And to take so many trys to as they say "destroy" the bear. Killing is killing destroy is semantics, senseless loss of life, the bears not the dirt bag ginseng poacher! He should have used some of the ginseng to get off meth!

Feb 6th - 06:04am | Anonymous

So the best died for nothing but being a bear. Some of us are so quick to judge one another (animals inc.) That bear was in his habitat where he should be allowed to do what bears do and because some tweeter died , doing something illegal , its the bears fault ? Smh

Feb 5th - 14:23pm | Kevin Harlan

This bear did nothing wrong. The story said the bear had acorn meat inside not human flesh. The bear was innocent, it was another meth head that caused it. Until of course a man comes along that obviously can't aim, and injures the bear.. and takes days to put it out of his misery. Stupid people!!

Feb 5th - 14:18pm | Kevin Harlan

The story said  this bear was full on acorn meant. There wasn't any human flesh in it. The poor bear was just living it's life until a meth head overdosed! The bear was innocen!

His friend, Joshua David Morgan did inorm the authorities, resulting in the search, and is now dead.

Feb 5th - 10:27am | Tennessee Hiker

i believe there was someone with the deceased and was hunting ginseng in the park also. They become separated and the ither man did not notify authorities for several days that his part was missing. the Other man supposedly admitted to hunting ginseng in the park. My question is "has this man been prosecuted" for his crime? If not, he should be.

Feb 5th - 10:23am | John Bowder

Tomp2  has very good points, but they could have waited for the autopsy on the dead man. That gave all the answers they needed. The bear wasn't a threat to anyone at the time. I agree it was a judgement call, but he should have waited for that autopsy report.

Elephant Seals Take Over New Beach In Point Reyes National Seashore

Feb 5th - 14:00pm | Rangerskip

Hmm...wondering if the Elephant Seals have taken over Drake's Beach or Limantour Spit. Either way, they should provide another prey source for the Great White Sharks which frequent that area. I lived there back in the 1970's before Elephant Seals discovered the area and the Great Whites fed primarily on sea lions and harbor seals.

Feb 5th - 11:22am | Dianne Milliard

Hooray for the seals! I visited Drake's Beach a couple of years ago and there was an elephant seal pup on the beach. It looked like a log! Great camouflage1 I photographed it from a safe distance and continued on my walk. When I returned, 2 tourists were harassing the poor thing, standing right over it. It made me so angry. I sympathize with the seals.

Shrimp Trawler Breaks Up, Washes Ashore At Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Feb 4th - 21:25pm | tomp2

That is an impressive debris field for a shrimp trawler.  I expected a couple of large pieces and then a bunch of little stuff, but that looks to be board by board, plastic piece by plastic piece. Given the high high tides for the next days or 2 from the new moon, that's going to be a real mess to clean up before it disperses far up & down the beach.
