A tropical storm warning was issued Tuesday afternoon for parts of the Gulf Coast, where heavy rains were predicted to drench some units of the National Park System, possibly impacting Big Thicket National Preserve in Texas and Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve in Louisiana.
Forecasts called for the storm to strengthen Wednesday and drop 5-10 inches of rain — and possibly upwards of 20 inches in some locations — as it moves to the northeast across the two states. Maximum sustained winds of 35 mph were forecast, with higher guests, the National Weather Service said.
"The key to whether this tropical rainstorm will focus enough wind energy to become a named tropical storm (Arthur) will hinge on its proximity to warm waters of the Gulf," AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said.
The growing size of the storm could bring impacts not only to Texas and Louisiana but also parts of Mississippi and far-western areas of Florida's panhandle, the Weather Service said.
While Accuweather forecasters don't expect the storm to enlarge into a hurricane, "[A] significant flood risk exists each day this week, shifting slowly eastward from Texas into Wednesday to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia during the second half of the week," said AccuWeather Vice President of Forecast Operations Dan DePodwin.
Depending on the path the storm takes, and how it evolves, it could impact Natchez Trace National Historical Park, the Natchez Trace Parkway, and possibly Horseshoe Bend National Military Park.
