The American bison will be featured on a new U.S. Postal Service stamp issue premiering at the Boston 2026 World Exposition. The exposition will be the 12th such international stamp collecting event in the United States and will run from May 23-30.
The stamp features a contemporary photograph of a bison inset with artwork evoking a 1923 stamp issued when the species was beginning to rebound from near extinction. Greg Breeding, an art director for USPS, designed the stamp using Tom Murphy’s existing photograph and artwork from the century-old stamp, according to USPS.
Bison were designated as the United States’ National Mammal in 2016. Once numbering around 30 million and ranging across the United States and in Canada and Mexico, bison were hunted to near extinction, with only several hundred remaining by the 1870s. Thanks to ongoing conservation work, there are currently 19 herds in 12 states roaming the American Plains.
Bison can be found at Grand Canyon, Badlands, and Yellowstone national parks, among other national park sites.
