Lava fountaining related to Episode 47 at Kīlauea in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is forecast to begin on May 13 or 14. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) is using geophysical data and webcam observations, which show small spatter bursts indicating that lava is close to the surface in eruptive vents, to predict when the fountaining may begin.
Scientists say lava overflows and more vigorous spattering may occur before the lava fountaining begins.
All eruptive vents and lava flows are confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Tephra fall from volcanic ash clouds is greatest within 3 miles of the vents, though lighter ash and Pele's Hair may stay suspended for large distances from the vents.
Episode 43 at Kilauea in March caused closures at the volcano’s summit due to hazardous amounts of falling tephra (volcanic rock, ash and glass particles). That episode also saw a new record as lava fountains from the south vent reach 1770 feet high.
Most lava fountaining episodes since December 23, 2024, when the eruption began, have continued for a day or less.
