Editor's Note: This has been updated with information about the discovery of the body of Sandarsh Krishna.
The body of Sandarsh Krishna, who had been missing since April 28, was recovered by National Park Service personnel on Saturday, May 9, at Grand Canyon National Park. The recovery took place below the South Rim near Verkamp’s Visitor Center.
The remains were transported to the rim and transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office, where they were identified. The incident remains under investigation.
Nearly three dozen personnel had been searching the park from the air and on the ground for nearly two weeks. The search involved rangers rappelling down into the canyon to reach areas out of sight from the South Rim along with drone flights and other efforts to spot Krishna.
Investigators believe Krishna was in possession of a black backpack prior to his disappearance. A similar backpack was later turned in to hotel personnel at Bright Angel Lodge on April 28 at approximately 7 a.m.
Investigators expressed interest in speaking with the individual who turned the backpack in to lodge staff, hoping to learn any information relevant to the investigation. The park said the individual was not considered a suspect, and it is unclear if they were able to locate him.
