The Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir, an important aspect of Everglades restoration and a significant water infrastructure project, received more than $2 billion in federal funding to support the reservoir’s expedited completion.
Following an agreement last year between the federal government and the State of Florida, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Jacksonville District modified the EAA Reservoir’s contract to ensure construction is completed by 2029. The project was previously planned to be completed in 2034.
The funding will help keep construction on an accelerated track and underscores the recognition of the Everglades, a $1 trillion economic asset to Florida's economy, as a national priority.
The reservoir will reconnect Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay, allowing clean freshwater to flow south. The reservoir will cover 10,500 acres and include an adjacent 6,500-acre stormwater treatment area. It is designed to store excess lake water which will be cleaned in the treatment area and then sent south to the Everglades and Florida Bay.
According to the Everglades Foundation, the EAA Reservoir is central to restoring the natural flow of water south, reducing harmful discharges to coastal estuaries, strengthening flood protection for communities, and safeguarding drinking water for millions of Floridians.
The reservoir will provide clean freshwater to the Everglades in the dry season, and water from the reservoir will help recharge the Biscayne Aquifer, which provides drinking water to millions in South Florida, while helping balance the salinity of Florida Bay.
