Shenandoah National Park will begin an infrastructure enhancement project at the Old Rag Trailhead on May 4. The park expects to complete the project by November 2026. During the project, the Park Service will close the main parking lot to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Following a major rain event in 2025, ruts roughly one foot deep and one foot wide developed in the main parking lot at Old Rag Trailhead, leading to a temporary closure until repairs were completed. This project will continue the enhancements.
Visitors will still be able to access the Old Rag Trailhead, and day-use tickets are still required from March 1 through November 30. During the project, visitors to the Old Rag Trailhead will use the existing overflow parking lots, reaching the trailhead by following a trail along a temporary route. Portable restrooms will be available in both lots, and one overflow lot will include a temporary contact station.
Upcoming Improvements:
Contractors will install a permanent contact station. They will also regrade and pave the parking lot. This will solve drainage issues and prevent washouts that cause storm-related closures. Contractors will also install a new vault toilet with accessible walkways.
