"Football-sized" volcanic fragments spit out of Kīlauea volcano rained down Tuesday on some overlooks at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
The debris, along with a volcanic plume rising 25,000 feet into the sky, marked the 43rd episode of the eruption that dates to December 2024.
"Fallout up to football-size pieces and smaller are reported at overlooks in Hawai'i Volcanoes National park, creating hazardous ground conditions. Accordingly, the Volcano Alert Level is being raised from WATCH to WARNING," the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

Kīlauea is the youngest and most active volcano in Hawai'i. It was formed about 280,000 years ago and is a fairly typical shield volcano with long, shallow slopes. Traditionally, the volcano is viewed by many Native Hawaiians as the home of the volcanic deity Pelehonuamea.
