Grand Canyon National Park is preparing an "adaptive approach" for the spring 2026 opening at the North Rim, heavily damaged by last year's Dragon Bravo Fire.

The entire North Rim remained closed after the fire, but portions were briefly reopened in the fall before winter weather arrived.

Park officials say their guiding philosophy for the spring season is: “We will open what we can, where we can, when we can.” Popular points of interest, including North Kaibab Trail, aim to open on May 15, weather and conditions permitting. Specific details about the North Rim 2026 season will be provided no later than April 1.

The blaze destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge and dozens of nearby cabins. Demolition and stabilization work is ongoing, and officials say they will also need to assess any impacts from winter weather. Fire damage to the landscape could also ramp up concerns for debris flows and other safety issues both on the North Rim and in adjacent areas of the park.

Officials say the spring reopening plan will prioritize visitor safety, resource protection, and operational readiness while providing access to the North Rim as quickly and responsibly as possible.

"We are committed to keeping the public and our partners informed as we learn more about the impacts of winter weather and the Dragon Bravo Fire," said Superintendent Ed Keable

Visitors and stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed and plan ahead by checking for updates on Grand Canyon National Park’s website and following Grand Canyon National Park on social media.
