Andersonville National Historic Site will host its annual Wreaths Across America event on Saturday, December 13. Wreaths Across America’s yearly mission is to place wreaths on the graves of military service members buried in national cemeteries across the country.
Andersonville is known as the deadliest ground of the American Civil War, as nearly 13,000 men died on the grounds of the park.
The event will honor military veterans with a brief ceremony at Andersonville National Cemetery, which will be open to the public. After the ceremony, attendees will be invited to place wreaths on graves in the national cemetery.
The event is supported by Wreaths Across America, the Bennett Family of Companies, the Taylor Family Foundation, Friends of Andersonville, the American Ex-Prisoners of War, Truist Bank, and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The park notes that the event offers an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of American service members—the holidays spent far from loved ones, the moments endured in harm’s way, and the countless acts of devotion to our country.
The event and entrance to the park are free of charge.
