The National Park Service will close Independence Hall to visitors from November 13, 2025, to January 28, 2026. During this time, preservation teams will complete comprehensive interior work to prepare the site for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.
Both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and signed in Independence Hall, making it an immensely important building in U.S. history. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Independence Square Improvement Project began in March, and rehabilitation and preservation work has already been completed in Congress Hall and Old City Hall. The project includes the construction of accessible ramps; repair and restoration of wood elements, masonry, plaster, and metal finishes; and application of historically accurate paint finishes to the ceilings, walls, and trim.
The infrastructure repairs and improvements at the site are said to be in alignment with Executive Order 14253 and are being carried out with help from skilled NPS maintenance assistance teams from the Historic Preservation Training Center and the Historic Architecture, Conservation & Engineering Center.
The three buildings included in the project collectively attract around three million visitors every year.
During the closure, the Park Service says the park will provide alternate experiences for the public to learn about Independence Hall and its history. Those planning to visit the park during that time period should check the park website for updated information and closure alerts, as well as notifications on Recreation.gov.
