HARPERS FERRY, WV — With the prospects for a quick end to the government shutdown fleeting, the leader of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy is calling for congressional collaboration to resolve the impasse.

“While the Appalachian Trail remains open to visitors during the government shutdown, the lapse in appropriations delays essential trail stewardship, from treadway repairs to land protection and Helene recovery," said Sandra Marra, the conservancy's president and CEO. "Congress and the White House could learn a thing or two from the A.T.’s cooperative management system that depends on people and groups with differing perspectives coming together to find consensus and serve the common good.

"The Appalachian Trail Conservancy calls for collaboration across the aisle to ensure the necessary annual funding bills are passed and that no additional reductions-in-force to our already lean public agency partners be advanced," added Marra. "The Appalachian Trail and all of our public trust resources deserve consistent appropriations and adequate staffing because volunteers and crews can’t do it themselves. The A.T. and the incredible people and places it connects deserve no less than the willingness to find a way to work together.”

On its website the conservancy urges trail advocates to reach out to their congressional representatives to urge them to resolve the funding stalemate.
