ASHFORD, Washington _ A recent rain storm at Mount Rainier National Park has taken down the water system that feeds the Paradise Inn, forcing visitors who need restrooms to travel to Longmire or the Cougar Rock picnic area.

A notice on the park's website and social media channels gave no indication when service, which failed Saturday, might be resumed, saying only that "[T]here is limited prepared food and water at the Paradise Inn. Thank you for your patience as the park works toward a resolution to this issue."

"We do not have an estimated date for resolution of the situation. We are continuing to work on the issue," park spokesperson Patti Wold said Sunday in an email. "On September 6, heavy rain from an intense thunderstorm created turbidity and stirred up fine materials in the drainage that continue to clog the water system filters. Sedimentation caused by heavy rain on the loose, unconsolidated soil and debris in the drainage has become an ongoing issue for the Paradise surface water source."

The park is working with the Washington State Department of Health to restore reliable water service for employees and visitors. Water will remain unavailable until it meets safe drinking water standards.

Staff have isolated all the buildings, shut down the restrooms, and have brought in portable comfort stations. Fire suppression is on untreated water lines and buildings continue to be protected.

Rainier Guest Services, the concessionaire that manages the Paradise Inn, said on its website that "food and beverage at Jackson Visitor Center and Tatoosh Café are extremely limited and the Paradise Inn dining room is closed. National Park Inn and Longmire remain fully operational."

The Park Service recommended that you call Rainier Guest Services at 855-755-2275 for updates on Paradise Inn operations.

There was no immediate information on whether reservations at the inn would be refunded.
