Editor's Note: This updates the status of the Gatlinburg Bypass from closed to open
GATLINBURG, TN—The Gatlinburg Bypass in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is now open following a significant landslide that temporarily closed the roadway over the weekend.
The NPS responded to reports of the landslide near the Great Smoky Mountains picture sign on the Bypass on September 27 around noon. A total of 3.47 inches (8.8 centimeters) of rain fell around mid-morning that day, triggering the slide which carried a load of mud, trees and other debris covering approximately 150 feet (45.7 meters) of roadway with one-to-four feet (0.3-1.2 meters) of mud and debris. Both lanes of travel were blocked.
Crews worked through Saturday and Sunday, removing more than 70 loads of debris from the road while continuing work to clear debris from the road drainage, ditches, and a currently blocked culvert.
The park extends its thanks to the City of Gatlinburg, Sevier County and the City of Sevierville for their swift and valuable assistance in supporting the National Park Service crews in the response to this event.
The Gatlinburg Bypass is a 3.6-mile (5.8-kilometer) scenic road connecting the Gatlinburg Spur and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
