The fire, which covered about one-tenth of an acre, was burning in mixed conifer forest about three-quarters of a mile southeast of the Bighorn Pass Trailhead off U.S. 191, a park release said Wednesday evening. It was spotted on Memorial Day.
Despite the fire, park officials say the parkwide fire danger level for Yellowstone is low and there are no fire strictions in place in the park.
Campfires are only permitted within established fire rings in campgrounds and some backcountry campsites. They must always be attended and cold to the touch before abandoning.
The Greater Yellowstone area is a fire-adapted ecosystem. Fire plays an important role in maintaining the health of this area’s wildlife habitat and vegetation.
