Backcountry campsites at Guadalupe Peak will be closed from Dec 20 through January 4/NPS file

Continued drought conditions are forcing closure of the backcountry area around Guadalupe Peak in Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas.

The area is to be closed from December 20 until January 4. "Due to exceptional drought, continued patterns of resource damage and illegal fire violations at Guadalupe Peak backcountry sites, all Guadalupe Peak sites will be closed to backcountry camping," the park announced this week.

"This action follows the park-wide fire restrictions enacted on November 18 to reduce fire risks within the park," the release added. "The park issues this administrative order for the purposes of limiting damage to and maintaining critical park resources during a period of extreme fire danger. The effectiveness of this order will be reassessed on an ongoing basis and may be modified when conditions warrant."
