Coronavirus And The Parks: Closing Doors

As the coronavirus pandemic regains steam across the country, states are taking different approaches to dealing with it, and that is affecting some units of the National Park System.

The National Park Service is not keeping a cumulative list of openings and closures, instead suggesting you contact individual parks to find out how they're dealing with the pandemic. Here is a list of the closures we're aware of:

Badlands National Park, South Dakota

  • The South Unit of the park is closed in accordance with Oglala Sioux Tribe ordinances.

Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site, Colorado

  • The fort is open and the public will be able to view inside the rooms from the doorways, but access inside the rooms will be temporarily discontinued. The park’s movie will not be available but is available online.

Cabrillo National Monument, California

  • Indoor spaces including the auditorium, Old Point Loma Lighthouse, and all exhibits are temporarily closed. Outdoors areas and restrooms are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona

  • Canyon de Chelly National Monument remains closed to comply with the Navajo Nation Public Health Order. The Navajo Nation also observes daily and weekend curfews.

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, North Carolina

  • Parking lots, trails, grounds, and the restroom near the Sandburg Home are open. The house, barn and barnyard, restroom near front lake, and other structures remain closed

Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico

  • Gallo Campground is temporarily closed.
  • The visitor center is temporarily closed.

Channel Islands National Park, California

  • The mainland and island visitor centers and the park's campgrounds are temporarily closed until further notice. The five park islands are still open for day visitation.

Death Valley National Park, California

  • Campgrounds are closed and permits are suspended. Lodging/hotels also closed with these orders. Roads, trails, and overlooks remain open.

El Morro National Monument, New Mexico

  • The visitor center is closed.

Fort Laramie National Historic Site, Wyoming

  • Grounds and trails open. Visitor center and most historic structures partially reopened. '66 Guardhouse, Bakery, and Post Trader are closed.

Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania

Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center is closed through Wednesday, January 6, 2021. 

Glacier National Park, Montana

  • The roads on the east side of the park are closed, as is typical for this time of year.
  • Additionally most areas within the park, east of the Continental Divide, remain closed to all access due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, just outside the park.
  • Non-essential travel on roads within the Blackfeet Indian Reservation is prohibited.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

  • SR 64, East Entrance to the park at Desert View via Cameron, is closed.

Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, Montana

  • The Ranch House remains closed. There are no house or wagon tours.

Golden Gate National Recreation Area, California

  • Some areas of the park, including Alcatraz Island and Fort Point National Historic Site, have closed as a result of changes to public health guidance.

Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, Arizona

  • Hubbell Trading remains closed to comply with the Navajo Nation Public Health Order. The Navajo Nation also observes daily and weekend curfews.

Independence Hall National Historical Park, Pennsylvania

  • All park buildings are temporarily closed. Outdoor spaces, including Washington Square and Signers Garden, remain open.

John Muir National Historic Site, California

  • The John Muir NHS (excluding Mt. Wanda) will be closed to the public until at least January 7.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

  • All campgrounds are closed and all programs are suspended. 

Museum and exhibit portions will be temporarily closed in the following facilities:

  • Oasis of Mara Visitor Center, bookstore and information desk remain open
  • Joshua Tree Visitor Center, bookstore and information desk remain open
  • Cottonwood Visitor Center, bookstore and information desk remain open
  • Black Rock Nature Center, bookstore and information desk remain open

Manzanar National Historic Site, California

  • Manzanar National Historic Site Visitor Center and Block 14 exhibits are temporarily closed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. The grounds and parking lots remain open sunrise to sunset.

Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, Vermont

  • The Carriage Barn Visitor Center, the Mansion and other historic buildings are temporarily closed.

Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

  • Mesa Verde Visitor & Research Center
  • Mesa Verde Museum Association Store at the Visitor & Research Center closed until further notice
  • Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum
  • Far View Terrace Café and Gift Shop
  • Far View Lodge
  • All cliff dwellings and ranger-guided cliff dwelling tours; This includes continued closures of Cliff Palace, Balcony House, Long House, and Step House. (Many cliff dwellings can be viewed from overlooks along the Mesa Top and Cliff Palace/Balcony House Loop Roads.)
  • Wetherill Mesa
  • Wetherill Mesa Road, sites, and trails
  • The 2020 Holiday Open House and Luminaria event is canceled.

Mojave National Preserve, California

  • Kelso Depot Visitor Center, Hole in the Wall Visitor Center, and the Zzyzx areas remain closed until further notice. The Hole in the Wall Campground and Midhills Campgrounds are closed.

Morristown National Historical Park, New Jersey

  • All buildings and restroom facilities remain closed.

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

  • Park visitor centers and Paradise Inn remain closed

Navajo National Monument, Arizona

  • Navajo National Monument is closed until further notice in compliance with the Navajo Nation's daily and weekend curfews that are in place.
  • Closures include visitor center, campgrounds, picnic areas, restrooms, and guided tours.

Olympic National Park, Washington

  • Makah Reservation, including Shi Shi Beach Trailhead, is closed to the general public.
  • The Quileute Reservation including Second Beach Trailhead is closed to the general public.

Pinnacles National Park, California

  • Bear Gulch Nature Canter and West Visitor Center remain closed.
  • Shuttle services inside the park remain non-operational.
  • ALL CAVES remain closed (Balconies and Bear Gulch Caves).

Point Reyes National Seashore, California

  • All park visitor centers and campgrounds are closed.
  • Some park roads, parking areas, and trailheads are closed to motorized access.
  • Beach fires & charcoal fires are prohibited.

Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial, California

  • Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial is closed until further notice.

Redwood National and State Parks, California

  • There is a temporary closure of some viewpoints and backcountry camps next to Yurok Tribal lands near the Klamath River. 
  • Non-retail spaces within visitor centers are temporarily closed. Indoor retail spaces remain open in national park visitor centers.

Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park, California

  • The Rosie Visitor Education Center will be discontinued until at least January 7, 2021.

Salem Maritime National Historic Site, California

  • Restrooms.
  • Salem Armory Visitor Center, historic buildings and exhibits, Friendship of Salem, and administrative offices.
  • No Ranger talks, programs, and/or tours.

Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, California

  • Both visitor centers (@King Gillette Ranch & Satwiwa) remain closed.
  • Restrooms at Santa Monica Mountains Visitor Center & Satwiwa are open.
  • Trails remain open, observe 6 feet of social distancing & wear a mask near others.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, California

  • All park campgrounds closed through at least December 28.
  • Wuksachi Lodge, restaurant, gift shop, and restrooms are closed through at least December 28.

Thomas Stone National Historic Site, Maryland

  • The buildings at Thomas Stone NHS will remain closed.

Tonto National Monument, Arizona

  • The Visitor Center Museum, Upper Cliff Dwelling and Trail, and Cactus Patch Trail remain closed.

Tumacácori National Historic Site, Arizona

  • The 2020 Christmas Eve luminaria celebration is canceled.

Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota

  • The cave and visitor center are closed.

Yosemite National Park, California

  • Yosemite is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for day-use activities only. Lodging and campgrounds are temporarily closed. Some services and facilities are limited; shuttles are not operating.
