September visitation to Devils Tower National Monument was the busiest ever/NPS file

Perhaps it was the result of cabin fever, or maybe a Close Encounters of the Third Kind revival, but Devils Tower National Monument was a popular place in September. Nearly 75,000 people visited the monument in northeastern Wyoming last month, a total that made this the busiest September in Devils Tower history.

Park staff say that crowd represented an 18 percent increase from September 2019. Overall for 2020, though, traffic to the geologic oddity is down. So far in 2020, the park has hosted approximately 385,140 recreation visits, down 9.6 percent from last year.

However, the park was closed due to health and safety reasons related to COVID-19 for nearly two months, from March 25 through May 21. Since May 22, visitation has been slightly higher than the same period in 2019.

Here's a glance at year-to-date recreation visits over the last several years (through September):

  • 2020 – 385,140
  • 2019 – 426,111
  • 2018 – 440,588
  • 2017 – 469,136
  • 2016 – 461,655
  • 2015 – 448,240
