Road work at Devils Tower National Monument late this month will prevent vehicle access to the visitor center, meaning you'll have to hike if you want a close-up view of Devils Tower itself.

The construction project at the monument in northern Wyoming is designed to improve physical access to the visitor center area and trail to the base of Devils Tower. These are the first major renovations to the visitor center area since the mid-1950s and will greatly improve experiences at the Tower for all visitors, a park release said.

For the safety of visitors, staff, and construction crews, the upper two miles of the park road will be closed to all vehicles from June 29 through July 3 to allow for concrete work and paving of the visitor center parking area. Vehicles will only be permitted along the first mile of park road from the entrance station to the picnic area.

Distant views of Devils Tower can be enjoyed from the picnic area down below. Longer hiking options taking visitors to the base of the Tower are also possible. Flush toilets and drinking water are available.
