Acadia National Park will embark on a wide variety of maintenance improvement projects within park boundaries over the spring, summer, and fall.
Major infrastructure improvements are underway at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center. Work should begin on the Frazer Point Pier (Schoodic Peninsula) in early July. Motor vehicle roads, such as the Park Loop Road, as well as the associated bridges require upkeep and maintenance including culvert replacement that may require intermittent one-way traffic. Carriage road bridges in the park - including the drainage systems - are also scheduled for maintenance that may require intermittent closures. Hiking trails scheduled for improvement projects include Kurt Diederich’s Climb Trail, Cadillac West Face Trail, and others. Some work has already been completed, such as the rehabilitation of 105 historic firepits at Seawall Campground (Loops A, B, and C) to their historic standard.
Maintenance improvement projects are funded through entrance fees to the park, cyclic maintenance funding, Helium Act funding, Federal Highways Administrations funding, other federal funding, and the generous support of Friends of Acadia. In addition, some of these improvement projects on hiking trails and carriage roads happen directly because of the Acadia Youth Conservation Corps that employs high school students through an anonymous gift endowment to Friends of Acadia. Every effort is made to schedule work to reduce impacts to visitors but occasional detours and closures may be necessary to maintain a safe environment for visitors, workers, and resources.
