Though Hurricane Florence has taken aim on the South Carolina-North Carolina area, the prediction of heavy rains has Shenandoah National Park scheduled to close/National Hurricane Center

Shenandoah National Park officials, with an eye on the heavy rains and high winds that Hurricane Florence could push far inland from the coast, plan to close the park to camping Wednesday night and the Skyline Drive to incoming traffic Thursday morning.

Meteorologists are forecasting a significant wind-rain event, particularly in Shenandoah’s higher elevations, the park said in a release. Damaging winds combined with already saturated soil will make for hazardous conditions with trees toppling and branches falling, it added.

Shenandoah’s concessioner, Delaware North, will close its properties, including Big Meadows and Skyland lodges, by noon on Thursday. For more information about the concessioner’s closures, please call 877-847-1919.

Park staff are assisting with the evacuation and readying the park’s equipment for deployment before sheltering until conditions improve.
