Voyageurs National Park Closes Ice Roads And Snowmobile Trails For Season

Share

The Olberholtzer Trail at Voyageurs National Park remains open when conditions permit/NPS

Voyageurs National Park is no longer recommending travel on frozen lake surfaces due to warming weather, as ice conditions are deteriorating, standing water is appearing on frozen lake surfaces, and bare ground can be found on the safety portages.

Park trail markers and hazard signs are no longer able to remain upright, so staff at the Minnesota park will remove them within the week. The Rainy Lake Ice Road, Kabetogama Lake Ice Road, and all snowmobile routes are closed. Other winter recreation trails in Voyageurs are no longer being maintained.

Visitors are welcome to hike the Oberholtzer and Rainy Lake Recreation trails as conditions permit. Park staff remind visitors that the Rainy Lake Visitor Center remains open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Winter at Voyageurs Event Series continues through the end of March each Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.
