Big Cypress National Preserve Fire Covers 11,000+ Acres

Ground and air resources were being used Wednesday to battle a wildfire in Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida that has spread to cover more than 11,000 acres.

Park officials said the fire, nicknamed Parliament, started Saturday of unknown causes. It was burning in a mix of grass, pine, and cypress habitat. At mid-day Wednesday the fire stood at 15 percent containment. Crews were using established trails, natural barriers, and previously prescribed fire areas in their efforts to douse the flames.

In addition to previous closures, on Wednesday the park closed the Monument Lake Campground.
