An "Evening at the Cape Lookout Lighthouse" is coming up on June 16 and June 17, offering visitors to Cape Lookout National Seashore an opportunity to witness a different side of the sand and surf on North Carolina's Outer Banks.
During these evenings the seashore staff invites you to watch the sunset and the moon and stars come out over unlit beaches. National Park Service rangers will tell stories of the light keepers and guide you into the lighthouse and around the island as the keepers did, in the dark of night with only the light of the moon to see by.
Coinciding with this event, on June 18 at the Harkers Island Visitor Center, Cape Lookout National Seashore honors the 50th Anniversary as a National Seashore, and 100 years of the National Park Service with family-fun activities, ranger programs, and a ceremony commemorating these milestones.
Reservations are required for the Evening at the Cape programs, and can be made at www.recreation.gov beginning on June 8, 2016 at 10 a.m. EST. The cost of the program is $28 (price includes ferry fee) and is non-refundable (weather dependent). There will be one evening ferry trip on each date for all the climbs on that night; the ferry will depart Harkers Island at 7:30 p.m. and return at about 10 p.m. Children joining the lighthouse climb must be at least 44-inches tall and able to climb the steps on their own. Children 12 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult (16 or older). Footwear is required as well.
