Judging from the reaction to photos of Grand Teton National Park posted on Traveler's Facebook page, the park that embraces the flanks of the Tetons in western Wyoming is one of the most popular in the country. And working every day to see that the park doesn't disappoint visitors is the Grand Teton National Park Foundation.
This nonprofit organization has supported many projects in the park, but currently the most admirable is the Inspiring Journeys campaign that is helping to underwrite the cost to rehabilitate the area and trails surrounding Jenny Lake. This is no quick-fix project, but one that is taking a small handful of years to complete. When it's finished, the mountainsides above Jenny Lake will be free of social trails, have better hiking trails that will last longer and require less National Park Service maintenance, and the front-county area around the lake will be more inviting.
Trail work isn't the only project the Foundation is involved with at Grand Teton. It also has been guiding a long-term project to bring more bear-proof boxes into campgrounds that can store foods and keep bears from getting into trouble. With winter's snows flying around the Tetons, it's also good to know that the Foundation helps pay for the grooming of the Teton Park Road for cross-country skiers.
As with any nonprofit organization, the Foundation relies on our donations to pay for many of these projects. To learn about the Inspiring Journeys project, the bear box campaign, winter grooming and more, check out the Foundation's page on the Traveler. And check back on the page from time to time to see what new work in the park the Foudation is involved in. And be sure to consider a donation.
