There are more than 50 mammal species living at Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota, including moose, wolves, bobcats, and squirrels. The two most charismatic animals you might see in the park are the moose and wolves, and out of these two, it’s the gray wolves that capture our attention the most, with their long, haunting howls heard at night.

Voyageurs National Park Wolf Update
Mention wolves and national parks and most think of Yellowstone National Park right? But Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota has a growing wolf population.
There are about 16 packs and 66 wolves in and around the park based on winter 2021-22 counts, and so far this year three packs have had litters. Four packs are being followed thanks to GPS collars.

The Wolves Within Voyageurs National Park
Unlike those at Yellowstone or Isle Royale, the wolves of Voyageurs National Park have always been there.
There was no need for a recovery operation for the predators like those at Yellowstone or Isle Royale, where humans in the first case and a warming climate in the second left those two parks in need of wolf transplants. Take a 10,000-foot view of Voyageurs and the heavily forested landscape, dotted with lakes, wetlands, and beaver dams, and it's understandable that wolves have been able to survive there since time immemorial.
