Theft of petrified wood, not user fees, is usually the big concern at Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. But recently a park employee was able to steal more than $300,000 in fees, according to the Interior Department's Office of Inspector General.

Man Fined $1,000 For Illegal Possession Of Wildlife, Taking Petrified Wood From Petrified Forest National Park

A North Carolina man with a hankering for wildlife and petrified wood has been fined $1,000 after rangers at Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona found 35 pounds of petrified wood and a trash bag with wings of birds protected by the Migratory Bird Act in his vehicle.

Fossilized Remains At Petrified Forest National Park Point To New Species

Though well-known for its colorful slabs of petrified wood, Petrified Forest National Park harbors much more in its badlands. A decade of work recently was followed with the announcement that the fossilized remains of a new species of Triassic reptile has been discovered in the park.

A Traveler Special Report: "Oil Trains" Pose A Significant Threat To National Parks

For more than a century, freight trains have rumbled up and over Marias Pass, skirting the south boundary of Glacier National Park, casting rolling shadows on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River below. Until recently the major threat was a grain car derailment, which on occasion left bears woozy from eating fermented grain. Today a derailment involving a 100-car train hauling highly combustible Bakken crude oil risks an environmental catastrophe unprecedented in National Park Service history.
