Years ago, during the last century, I spent quite a lot of time on the "floor" of New River Gorge, rafting its famous river. Naturally, I also spent a lot of time gazing up at the surrounding mountains with their cliffs. Little did I know that they'd eventually become one of the key climbing destinations in the East.

New River Gorge National River To Host Public Meeting On Climbing

New River Gorge National River invites members of the public who have an interest in climbing at New River Gorge National River and Gauley River National Recreation Area to the autumn climbing public meeting. The event will be held on October 27 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center on U.S. Route 19, just north of Fayetteville, West Virginia.

Renaming New River Gorge National River A "National Park" Triggers Hunting Concerns

West Virginia's official state motto is "Montani Semper Liberi," which translates to "Mountaineers are always Free" and which might explain U.S. Shelley Moore Capito's move to both rename New River Gorge National River as New River Gorge National Park and allow sport hunting to continue within its boundaries.

Improvements Coming To Boardwalk And Viewing Decks At New River Gorge National River

The National Park Service has received funds to replace the boardwalk system at Canyon Rim Visitor Center in New River Gorge National River in West Virginia. The boardwalk and associated viewing decks are relatively easily accessible from the parking lot and offer scenic views of the iconic New River Gorge Bridge, as well as views into the river gorge itself.
