Big Cypress National Preserve

Managers of Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida, already criticized by conservationists for their approach towards off-road vehicles, would increase the miles of ORV trails under all but one of the preliminary alternatives in the preserve's draft backcountry access management plan while holding non-motorized trails somewhat static. The one that doesn't increase ORV use would preserve the status quo.

A coalition of conservation organizations has asked the National Park Service to reject Burnett Oil Company’s proposed seismic testing for oil and gas on privately-held mineral rights beneath Big Cypress National Preserve.

"Thumper trucks," which pound the ground in a fashion designed to detect oil, and even explosives detonated for the same purpose, could be allowed on 110 square miles of Big Cypress National Preserve under a plan being considered by the National Park Service.

With drier weather descending on Florida for the winter, more activities are being scheduled at Big Cypress National Preserve, from star shows to festivals.
