Feeding Farm Animals Is A Park Ranger's Work At Former Tobacco Plantation

It’s 10 a.m. on a Saturday and the visitor center at Booker T. Washington National Monument is temporarily closed, albeit for an unusual reason. “The Park Ranger is down in the Historic Area taking care of the animals,” an apologetic sign explains. “They will return soon.”

Nearly $500,000 in grants have been made to protect more than 130 acres of battlefields in Alabama, Mississippi, and Virginia that were threatened by damage or destruction from development.

Archaeological Excavation At The Coleman Site Of Appomattox Court House

Archaeologists from the University of South Carolina are partnering with Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and the Northeast Regional Archaeology Program to perform an excavation in the park sponsored by Civil War to Civil Rights funding from the National Park Service. The current excavation is located on the historic Dr. Samuel Coleman property, investigating the potential dwelling site of Hannah Reynolds, an enslaved African American servant of the Coleman family.

All Set For The West: Union Pacific And The National Parks

Abraham Lincoln saw in the name renewal—the Union Pacific. Chartered by Congress in 1862, it was a railroad forged out of the depths of civil war. Lincoln then fervently hoped to heal the Union by stretching its tracks across the West. Finally, with Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, the great undertaking could begin. By then, Lincoln had been assassinated, but the Union would indeed endure.
