Pruning the Parks: North Dakota’s Sullys Hill National Park (1904-1931)

Using authority granted by Congress on April 27, 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Sullys Hill Park, a hilly tract of woods and wetlands in North Dakota that was named for a hill that was named for a general who didn’t show up. The park, which turned out to be pretty much of a no-show too, was delisted in 1931 and re-purposed as a wildlife refuge.

Cape Cod National Seashore Officials Revisit Plan To Kill Crows To Help Piping Plovers

Cape Cod National Seashore officials, who earlier this year were proposing to kill crows in an effort to protect piping plovers, are backing away from the plan due to the prospective of being sued over the matter. Instead the seashore will spend this year reviewing its shorebird management plan.

Gulf Islands National Seashore Officials Ready To Deal With Oil Spill ... If It Washes Ashore

While it remains to be seen whether oil leaking from an exploratory well drilled deep in the Gulf of Mexico will wash ashore at Gulf Islands National Seashore, officials there are ready to deal with that situation if it arrives.

Fall near Buffalo National River Claims Life of Former Football Star

When a serious emergency strikes, parks often rely on help from surrounding agencies for additional manpower or expertise. That cooperation is a two-way street, and the staff at Buffalo National River was recently called upon to help when a fall from a high bluff claimed the life of a former football star near the park.

Overton Beach Area Latest Casualty of Low Water Level at Lake Mead National Recreation Area

The continuing drop in lake levels has forced the closure of the Overton Beach visitor services facilities at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The road to the area is being gated to restrict vehicle access and facilities mothballed for what the park hopes is a temporary closure.

Creating an Urban Gateway to Biscayne National Park on Virginia Key

When National Park Director Jon Jarvis traveled to Miami recently, the closest he could get to the Dante Fascell Visitor Center of Biscayne National Park was Virginia Key, a barrier island off the coast of Miami that overlooks the watery boundaries of Biscayne National Park in Biscayne Bay.

Isle Royale National Park's Wolf Population Loses Two Packs, Moose Population Steady

A decline in the moose population at Isle Royale National Park, along with inbreeding, are being blamed for the loss of two of the island's four wolf packs. Where once the island's wolf population had numbered more than 50 individuals, by the close of 2009 there were fewer than 20, researchers say.
