Two national parks in New York are teaming up to host a special week-long event to highlight the fight for women's freedoms.
"Equality Week" starts Tuesday and runs through Aug. 31 at Women’s Rights National Historical Park and Harriet Tubman National Historical Park. It's the first joint public event between the two sites, located in New York's Finger Lakes Region about 16-miles from each other by car.
Starting with Women’s Equality Day, the week will feature guest speakers, living history programs, family-friendly activities, and special exhibits – all centered around the theme of equality and the ongoing fight for equal rights. The programs will be offered during regular park operating hours at both locations.
Daily featured speakers at Women’s Rights NHP in Seneca Falls include:
Tuesday, Aug. 26: "Activism, Advocacy, Autonomy: The Evolution of the Women’s Health Movement" with Dr. Katie Kicinski-Burkhardt
Wednesday, Aug. 27: “Class Struggle and the Early Women’s Rights Movement” with Ranger Molly Jessup from Women’s Rights NHP
Thursday, Aug. 28: “The Marathon Continues: Harriet Tubman's Fight for Fair Pay” with Ranger Brittany Lane from Harriet Tubman NHP
Friday, Aug. 29: “Behind the Camera: The Photography of Grace Woodworth,” with Jonathan Monfiletto, director of the Seneca Falls Historical Society; and living history presentations with Elizabeth Cady Stanton (portrayed by Melinda Grube). Please note: Friday’s programs will be ASL interpreted thanks to a grant from the National Park Foundation.
Saturday, Aug. 30: Living history presentations with Elizabeth Cady Stanton (portrayed by Melinda Grube)
Harriet Tubman NHP in Auburn will offer timed ranger programs on Aug. 29 and Aug. 30 and hands-on activities. A special pop-up display: “Community, Faith, and the Fight for Equality in Auburn,” will highlight how the Thompson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church congregation fought for the equality of all city residents in the early 20th century.
Women’s Equality Day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which granted many, but not all, American women the right to vote. The special programs throughout the week highlight this milestone and explore continued struggles for equality, and the inequities which make this fight necessary.
Women’s Rights National Historical Park is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
Harriet Tubman National Historical Park is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays,
