Two nonprofits are teaming up to help students experience the outdoors at Joshua Tree National Park in the deserts of Southern California.
The Joshua Tree Residential Education Experience, or JTREE, is being integrated into the Joshua Tree National Park Association. The unified education initiative will be called DiscoverJTREE.
"DiscoverJTREE will serve students from varied backgrounds and expand access to meaningful outdoor learning experiences, particularly for youth who have traditionally lacked access
to such opportunities," the association stated in a news release.
Joshua Tree National Park sits where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet, in an area about 130 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The park is known for its twisty Seussian trees and unique rock formations. The site covers nearly 2,000 square miles and logged about 3 million annual visits over each of the past four years.
Joshua Tree National Park Association has been the park's nonprofit partner since 1962, supporting educational programming, scientific research, and historical activities. JTREE, dedicated to providing youth of all ages with immersive science-based residential programs, will operate alongside the association's Desert Institute, which offers programs like field classes, recreational adventures, and social events that center on the park and learning more about it.
"DiscoverJTREE will expand the organization’s reach to include multi-day, residential youth programs aligned with California’s environmental literacy and science standards," according to the news release.
