Jasper National Park will welcome visitors back to Miette Hot Springs on Sept. 1 to once again enjoy the hottest mineral water in the Canadian Rockies. Miette Hot Springs Bungalows, the only privately owned facility past the Miette Road closure, will also reopen.

These two Alberta spots closed unexpectedly on June 19 after a snow storm that caused a mudslide, hundreds of downed trees and a significant washout that closed Miette Road.

Miette Road will reopen by Aug. 31, with a section of the road limited to single-lane alternating traffic controlled by traffic lights. Expect short delays.

The hours of operation for Miette Hot Springs will be (subject to change):

• Sept. 1 to 4: 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• Sept. 5 to Oct. 9: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

To maintain the required lifeguard-to-patron ratio, the number of people in the pool during peak visitation periods may be restricted due to staff shortages.

Miette Hot Springs will close for the season on Oct. 9 and will reopen in May 2024.

The washout on Miette Road was on a particularly steep section which made ensuring safe mitigation measures challenging, Parks Canada said. The washed-out slope has been deemed stable by geotechnical engineers with rerouting to allow for single-lane alternating traffic. Parks Canada is working on a longer-term solution that will establish a permanent realignment of the road.
