Kurt,
There's an interesting study going on right now wrt the nesting population of sea turtles (see here: http://www.seaturtle.org/nestdb/genetics.shtml?program=1&beach=2 ) on the beaches of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
If the Park Service is touting the use of GIS to track and manage the Birds and Turtles, why aren't they disposed of publishing the Data and Maps from the previous years? Is there something in the data that doesn't hold up to their spin on Resource Management???

Kurt, I don't know who was or was not paid in the Cape Hatteras situation. Maybe those listed organizations will comment, in the interest of transparency. They don't say much unless it's PR Specialist stuff. Myself, I'm pretty tired of that, from anyone. Must have to do with PC/agenda replacing truth. They aren't alone in that regard but thankfully it's "unsustainable" at great cost.
Wind Change,
Sorry, but the devil's advocate has to ask:
Is there proof anywhere that 1) Defenders and Audubon billed the govt under EAJA and 2) they were paid and 3) ditto for OBPA?
If it's good for the goose...
If these are truly admirable organizations why don't they do this as a service to the resource and quit banging the tax payers! Yes, the endangered tax payers. I feel a wind change. Maybe, something much stronger. Think the taxpayers appreciate the selling of Treasuries increasing our debt (Downgrade to AA+) to pay scammers/career litigators? Let me guess, Libs/Progressives?
Kurt ( Does anyone know ...)
I do not know. I recall conversation that litigation was entered on two occassions by organizations other than SELC,etc. concerning issues at Cape hatteras. Do not know who or for what but, seems that one ruled in favor and one not. Don't know anymore.
I suppose that depends on your idea of merit. I'm no Lawyer, just a dumb fireman who loves to fish the beach at Cape Hatteras. But I have enough common sense to know that what the park service and environmental groups are doing is simply wrong.
Maybe it's not all about you. Maybe it's for people like me, a guy that lived in the shadow of the mountain for 30 years but now, thanks to an illegal crashing in to my bike without any insurance, I will never be able to snowshoe at Paradise, or walk the woods around Cat Creek and Ashford again. Anyone that can look at that view and think it's cheap wouldn't have a clue anyway.
Thanks to National Parks Traveler, this forum provides a mechanism for different perspectives to be voiced and discussed. I understand the need for some readers to voice their opinions and concerns anonymously. If there were not for the fear of administrative retaliation or social isolation by ones peers, it would be easy for those commenting to identify themselves. Nevertheless, when there'
As a 40 year employee of the NPS and one who has always chosen to challenge status quo and tradition (even when, inside, I actually agreed), I thought I would weigh in for a moment. As in any agency, company, community and nonprofit, there are always larger shades of grey than there are black and white. There are "insiders" and "outsiders." People in power surround themselves with clones of
The trail goes from Clingmans Dome in the Smokies to Jockeys Ridge State Park in the Outer Banks, a 1,000 miles through North Carolina.

What a great accomplishment! Congratulations to all.
The little piece still to be finished will be challenging as it will somehow
go around Waterrock Knob - yes, with lots of rocks. But Friends of the MST, the Carolina Mountain Club and plenty of volunteers will do it.

It sure would have been fun to see a map of where this trail starts and finishes. I live in the flatlands of Wilmington NC and this sounds like a great way to spend a vacation where there's some vertical diversity!
Many thanks to Randy Johnson and all the MST volunteers. I walked a section of the trail near Graveyard Fields back in July and really appreciated the trail route and the thoughtful attention to design.
“SS1 I believe the problem between you and I is that you dwell on the fact that everything I say is simply to bolster the orv side of the equation. And sometimes that is the case.”
Yes that is a problem. I question your comments when they pertain to ORV issues at
Cape Hatteras basically for the same reason you state,
I don't know when the term Affiliated Areas was first used, or by what authority. Perhaps a more knowledgable reader can help?
This is what the NPS has to say by way of defining Affiliated Areas:
Affliated Areas: In an Act of August 18, 1970,
the National Park System was defined in law as, "any area of land
What is even bigger news is that Sleeping Bear Dunes made it to the Top 10 in Good Morning America's Most Beautiful Places in America! Now everyone can vote to make it #1. Go to: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/best_places_USA/
This is deeply confusing that the boat at Sleeping Bear is named "Pictured Rocks". I couldn't figure out how the sunset was where it was if that was the south shore Superior. I'm OK now.
I'm glad I got to stay in one of these cabins before removal. It's too bad, but if someone was killed in Curry while they were asleep, what would we say then?
When the seemingly inevitable draconian cuts to the NPS budget arrive, my magic wand wave would reverse the historic pattern and have them start at the top of the bureaucratic food chain, where the corruption and incompetence are most concentrated. If I got a second wave, I'd move the Park Service out of the Sodom & Gomorrah that is the Interior Department.
Suddenly make all tourons understand and respect both wildlife viewing regulations and litter laws. The 2 things that drive me the craziest are trash in pristine places and people approaching or feeding wild animals.
Actually, I'm not sure if there is a correlation between pay and performance particularly at the upper levels. The power and elitism that comes (for many) as such a great temptation to those that aren't grounded enough to recognize when they are running amuck is pretty evident in the IMR's recent past.
Well if this is an all powerful wand then I would simply wish to restore all natural areas in all parks to their pre-European settlement state. No more invasive species issues and extinct species would be seen again.
I agree with the magically restoring Hetch Hetchy comment.
I would also make every American visiting the parks fit enough to hike farther than from the parking lot to the overlook. (On a recent visit to Bryce Canyon, it seemed as though the only people hiking below the rim were Germans and French).
1) Clean up the leadership and management mess; which is the NPS
2) Teach NPS values, mission and service – restart the Ranger Skills training program – if you teach your largest and most visible job series agency values, they will act accordingly and the agency will get back on track
I agree with the increase of Ranger salaries by tapping the SES pay and benefits which are on par with the Congress benefit package (look what that's got us). The Rangers are the real face of NPS. Let the SES pay homage as something that would help mitigate the character mistakes that have besmirched the image of those that deal one on one with the citizens.
Jennifer is in the "super athlete" category and must be mentally disciplined as well as phycially fit. I managed a five-day backpacking trek in the Smokies and will forever cherish the memories. Congratulations to a fellow North Carolinian!
Bob, this is an easy one; maybe set a record for correct answers. Could kick myself for not checking Traveler early in the AM, being the night owl I have become in retirement!
