A photo of a daredevil kayaker negotiating the Kern River in Sequoia National Forest received the grand prize in the National Park Foundation's Share the Experience photo contest, while a scenic from Glacier National Park was awarded first prize.

The contest is designed to encourage amateur photographers to explore the nation’s federal lands and share their experiences by capturing and submitting their favorite shots. This year's winning photograph will be featured on the 2013 Federal Recreational Lands Pass

This year, Glen Maki of Wofford Heights, California, received the grand prize for his photo of an outdoor enthusiast kayaking through the raging white water of the mighty Kern River in California’s Sequoia National Forest. In addition to his photo being featured on next year’s Federal Recreational Lands Pass, Mr. Maki will receive a four day/three night trip for four people to a National Recreation Area of his choosing, a Magellan GPS eXplorist 610, an REI gift card and a Federal Recreational Lands Pass.

First prize went to Vanessa Lau of Springfield, Virginia, for her photo from Glacier National Park. Gilda B. from Pacific Palisades, California, received second prize for her photo of a sea turtle in Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park in Hawaii, while third prize went to Laura Vu of Fort Worth, Texas, for her photo of Ouachita National Forest in central Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma.

This year’s honorable mention recipients are: Ilene Eberly of Stone Harbor, New Jersey; Jeremy Evans of Valencia, California; Michael Hamilton of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Jeanne Johnson of Land O Lakes, Florida; Michael Kirkland of Chicago, Illinois; Raghuveer Makala of Sunnyvale, Calfornia; Craig McCaskill of Boulder, Colorado; Eve Schrank of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Chris Summitt of Tuscon, Arizona; and Murrey Walker of Branson, Missouri.

In total, 14,886 photos were submitted over the course of the contest, which ran from June 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011.

I am glad to see another photo with a person actually getting outside and enjoying their federal lands win.  This photo on this year's pass is one of my favorites!
