To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Great Basin National Park, the Great Basin National Park Foundation has launched a free Virtual Speaker Series to highlight the park's rich history, science, and contribution to Nevada’s heritage and culture.
The series began on January 27 and will include several unique programs in the coming months.
Upcoming programs include:
- February 24 – The Park / Art Connection, featuring four former Artists-in-Residence discussing how creative expression deepens public connection to national parks.
- March 24 – Packrat Middens: Uncovering Thousands of Years of Biotic Change in the Great Basin, with Dr. Ally Coconis of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. She will explore how preserved packrat nests reveal long-term climate and ecological history in the Great Basin region.
- April 21 – Water Warriors, with author Michael Branch sharing stories from his forthcoming book about western water conflicts and grassroots conservation efforts.
- May 12 – Great Basin National Parks Designation Story, featuring the former Chief of Staff and Legislative Director for Harry Reid, former BLM Director, former NV Governor and Senator, and stories from the park superintendent during the transition.
Monthly virtual programs will continue through October, the month the park was officially designated in 1986. All events are free and open to the public, with advance registration required.
Program details and registration links are available at greatbasinfoundation.org/news/40anniversary.
