The YMCA of the Rockies' Estes Park Center will host a community clean-up hike at Rocky Mountain National Park this weekend, an effort inspired by the government shutdown and the lack of maintenance staff currently at the park.

"[W]e see this as an opportunity to be good neighbors when, many times throughout our history, [Rocky Mountain National Park] has been good neighbors to us,” said Jason Nelson, communication director for the YMCA of the Rockies, in a recent email. “We saw this as an opportunity to step up in a respectful and helpful way, offering guests a way to give back to the park during their visit."

YMCA staff will lead a four-mile round-trip hike through scenic trails in the park while collecting litter along the way. “It’s an easy, rewarding way to support the park and preserve its natural beauty for all to enjoy,” states one event announcement.

Any interested volunteers are invited to meet at 8:30 a.m. on October 18 and 19, at the Boone Family Mountain Center on the YMCA property.

Much of Rocky Mountain National Park has remained open during the shutdown, though it, like many national parks across the country, is functioning with very limited staff. Many of the staff who would normally take care of park maintenance have been furloughed for the duration of the shutdown.
