Editor’s note: This updates with fire contained.

A wildland fire at Grand Teton National Park on Saturday forced the evacuation of the Signal Mountain area of the park. Later in the evening the forward progress of the fire was halted, keeping it at about eight acres.

Initial information from the park was sketchy, but a release said "law enforcement rangers evacuated visitors from the top of Signal Mountain and along Signal Mountain Road. The road is currently closed to all traffic until further notice."

There was no word regarding the Signal Mountain Lodge and its guests and marina, nor of Jenny Lake Lodge and its guests. The road was to remain closed through the night.

Smoke from the fire was visible from various locations within the park, including the Jackson Lake Dam and the Jackson Lake Lodge area. Approximately 35 personnel initially responding to the incident. Resources on scene include two fire engines, a Type 1 and a Type 3 helicopter.

A second park release later in the evening said support from two helicopters that pulled water out of Jackson Lake and dumped it on the flames was key in slowing the fire’s growth. Firefighters on the ground were able to dig fire lines around it to keep it from spreading, the release said.

Firefighters were expected to remain on the scene throughout the night.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
