As daily newspapers continue to trim staff, where will you turn to get news about Bears Ears National Monument? The Traveler strives to fill the niche./John Miles
That's a very good question in light of today's tremors going through newspapers across the country. The Denver Post, Salt Lake Tribune, Ogden Standard-Examiner, The San Jose Mercury News, and Casper Star-Tribune are among the daily papers that recently have announced layoffs. In the case of the Salt Lake Tribune, one-third of the newsroom was being let go.
National Parks Traveler, as the only editorially independent web magazine dedicated to daily coverage of national parks and protected areas throughout the world, is bucking that trend. With a multimedia approach, we inform and educate a global audience of 1.5 million about these places and strive to build a stronger advocacy for protection and sound stewardship of the parks.
But we need your support to succeed.
Is the national parks beat a niche? Yes, but at the same time, it touches so many facets of the world – biology, archaeology, paleontology, wildlife management, recreation, health, cultural resources, natural resources, history – that what transpires in the National Park System has an impact on lands beyond their borders.
