UPDATED: Body Of Teen Swept Away In Middle Fork Of Kaweah River At Sequoia National Park Recovered

Editor's note: This updates with the teen's body recovered.

Searchers on Monday afternoon recovered the body of a teenager who fell into the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River in Sequoia National Park. Park officials said Tomas Martinez, 18, of Woodlake, California, was with friends in the park when he fell into the river on Sunday.

With temperatures heating up as summer approaches, the record-setting Sierra Nevada snow pack is starting to melt and flow, making the rivers that flow through Sequoia and neighboring Kings Canyon National Park rough, cold, and dangerous, a park release said. Park rangers strongly ask that people not go in or near the edge of rivers as the rocks next to them are slick and steep.

“Many rivers in California are going to get very high and very dangerous. The best thing you can do is not go near these rivers. Don’t swim. Don’t go in,” said Ned Kelleher, chief ranger of Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks.

A park release did not specify where the body was recovered.
