Two swimmers drowned Friday at Cape Hatteras National Seashore/NPS

Two swimmers, one who apparently got caught up in a rip current and another who tried to save him, have drowned at Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina.

Park officials said one of the victims, a 70-year-old man, was swimming and apparently got caught in a rip current just north of the Rodanthe Pier on Friday afternoon. Several individuals nearby swam out to assist, they added.

When DARE county EMS and Chicamacomico Surf Rescue arrived at the scene they recovered two individuals from the water, but were unable to resuscitate either the 70-year old male or a 51-year old male who tried to save him.
