Recent record-breaking rain on Hatteras Island has impacted ramps, campgrounds, and roads along Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and another rain event is anticipated this Sunday. It has been reported that up to 14 inches of rain fell on the Outer Banks of North Carolina between Saturday, May 28, and Thursday, June 2.
Currently, at Cape Point Campground, there are approximately 7-8 inches of standing water, which has made the campground inoperable for the foreseeable future, seashore officials said Friday.
"Yesterday, we paused the online reservation system for Cape Point Campground for seven days. After a week, park staff will assess the campground and determine if it is safe to allow visitors to reserve camping spaces. There are no other Seashore campground closures," a park release said.
As of Friday, there were no plans to close any beach ramps due to standing water. If attempting to use a ramp on Hatteras Island, you're advised to use your best judgment. The ramps most heavily impacted by the recent rainfall are 43, 44, and 49. Beach ramp status is continually monitored and updated according to existing conditions.
