If you live near Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Indiana, hope for clear skies Sunday night and head to the lakeshore to watch the "super moon" rise over the lakeshore.
From 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday rangers will be on hand at Chellberg Farm to help you enjoy a fall evening watching a total lunar eclipse of the super moon. When the moon’s orbit brings it to its closest point to the Earth, it is called a “super moon” because it can appear to be 14 percent larger than normal.
This moon will also turn a reddish hue as a result of passing directly behind the Earth into its shadow. During the evening at the farm, visitors can take turns watching the moon change through the park’s telescope. During the evening, a short night hike will be offered for those who want to wander in the near total darkness of the eclipse. Try not to miss this event; it won’t happen again until 2033. Bring a flashlight for the walk back to the parking lot after the program.
Park and meet the ranger at the Bailly/Chellberg parking lot located at 618 N. Mineral Springs Road in Porter, Indiana. The program site will be a short walk from the parking lot to the farm yard.
